Are you getting enough sleep for the level of health you deserve?

How much sleep do you need? How is your body hurt when you deprive it of sleep? Is sleep overrated? Can you gain weight from lack of sleep? This past weekend I finally got sick from a weakened immune system that has pushed hard for the last few months but gotten little sleep. I invite you to discover a lesson that I’m putting to practice as we speak.

Sleeping enough hours is a way for your body to function at an optimal level. When we sacrifice sleep to “get more done” our body catches up to us eventually and we end up paying an expensive price with our health. This video presents an argument as to why you selfishly need to make a conscious decision to sleep enough hours.

This is fascinating. I always knew that getting enough sleep is important, but I never knew the chemical/biological impact of shirkin on the slumber. Wow. Like you, I'm often pushing too hard - often working until midnight or later & then getting up bright and early (emphasis on the early, not so much with the bright) the next morning. You've inspired me to put more effort into making sure I get enough sleep. Thank you!

Jamie, I'm so glad this was useful to you. Achieving a balance is hard but not achieving one is ultimately harder right? Let me know if you do manage to sleep a few more hours each week and if so what you did differently to still be able to maximize your day. Un abrazote my friend! -Bernardo

Thanks for doing this wonderful research Bernardo! Now I don't feel so bad for sleeping in this morning! You're so right, this blogging thing can really eat away at your waking hours and :o your sleeping ones! Have a great day! Lori

Hi Lori, Glad you liked the post and hopefully some days this post will be a reminder to be kinder to your body and sleep a little earlier. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Abrazos, -Bernardo

Ha! That's a funny question actually :P I LOVE to sleep... But I'm sure I don't get *enough* sleep. I've been having trouble sleeping right for quite a few years now, and on some days it's definitely harden than others, but I think it's also about making the most of when one does sleep. I usually can't fall asleep, no matter how early I go to bed, until 2 AM the earliest (then there's 3 or 4 AM). I tried getting up early to exhaust myself properly in the hopes that I might fall asleep earlier. It doesn't work. Lately, when the weather permits, I go out with my roller blades for a bit in the evening and that helps a bit. So aside from this, my solution is to just read before bed, try and turn the lights off at around 1 AM tops and since thankfully I can afford to, sleep in in the morning so I'll get a total of at least 6 hours of sleep. Sure I wake up more often than not before when I'm hoping to, but I'm trying not to let it upset me too much anymore...

Hi Estrella, Thank you for your comment, you are right - people have different hours in which they are more alert or awake than others. If you've found a strategy for sleeping well and are getting at least 6 hours, that is great, 7 would probably be better :) How great that your flexible schedule allows you to sleep in. I've found that meditating helps and so does exercising hard at some point in the day, not sure if you are already doing one or both of those things now. I'm doing my best to consciously go to sleep earlier knowing that it will not be possible to do so everyday. As long as I have more of those days I will be getting closer to a healthier sleeping lifestyle. A Big hug Estrella! -Bernardo

Hey Bern. The simple answer is no. I;ve suffered with insomnia for over 8 years, and to be honest since I started blogging, it has not gotten any better. Lack of sleep causing all sort of mental, emotional and physical problems, and unlike problems which people can see, telling people " i'm tired all the time", soon get's boring for them and for you. My experiences with insomnia and all its resulting issues have been in the extreme and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

Hi Stacey, Thank you for stopping by my friend! I do not have insomnia related problems but I do know that these 2 things might help. -Exercising first thing in the morning vs later in the day -Meditating -Doing Yoga -Asking yourself better questions I'm curious, why do you think you can't sleep (If you were being brutally honest with yourself? Hugs, -Bernardo -Bernardo

Hey Bern, Thanks for the video. I've been trying to get more sleep lately, because I've started to notice that I become depressed if I don't get enough sleep. Not just that, but my productivity skyrockets when I get my 8 hours. I'm focused, I'm energetic, I'm productive... It's amazing. It's hard sometimes, because I'm a bit proponent of Gary Vaynerchuck's Crush IT! mentality. I go to work, get home at 7pm, eat dinner, spend a little time with the wife, and work on my web projects until about 12. Problem is that doesn't allow me to get enough sleep, and my body and mind suffers. I've resorted to working less on my web projects at night, and devoting more time to them on the weekends. I even take vacation days once a month to get programming out of the way. This video was timely. It's encouraged me to make sleep a priority. I also love the production quality of your videos. The intro and music is great, the lighting and quality is fantastic. Can you share some behind the scenes info about your setup and equipment? I've done a lot of video blogging in the past, and I'd love to be able to reproduce the quality of your vids. Best, Dan

Hi Dan, So good to see you hanging out here! I've managed to do ok with 4 hours or 5 but it's really like a loan that at some point gets repaid (with interests). It just happened last weekend and now I'm re-evaluating how hard I can push myself without putting my health at risk. I too live by the crush it philosophy I just have to make sure I balance it more. Thank you for the kind words on my video setup. It is quite simple. A canon Digital Camera Two soft boxes with 4 bulbs each Two lamps to reflect on the white backdrop (1 bulb each) 1 paper white drop. Here's an image of the setup http://bit.ly/fapDsg Any way I can help you with answers/tips please contact me my friend I'll be glad to help :) Thank you for taking the time to comment! Bernardo
